As the new year begins in earnest, many people are looking to make positive changes to their life. One common resolution a lot of people make is to improve their health. We won’t be taking a look at diet or exercise here today. Instead, we’ll be looking at how a deep tissue massage can help you start your year off right and get you on the path to improved health. Call Coastal Chiropractic today to schedule your first deep tissue massage.

-What is a deep tissue massage?

Though deep tissue does share some similarities to Swedish massage, it has a greater focus on deep pressure from the fingers for a therapeutic effect than the light pressure employed in a Swedish massage. Swedish massage is centered around more surface-level issues, while deep tissue works on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and the fascia.

-What can you expect?

A massage carries a connotation of relaxation, but you should not expect deep tissue massage to feel like a rub down from a cloud. Because deep tissue massage is intended for rehabilitation, it can be surprising how much it can hurt. The pain arises because a deep tissue massage works against the muscles to relieve issues that lie beneath the muscles and tissue. However, just because there is some pain involved doesn’t mean excruciating pain is normal. If it gets to be too intense, tell your massage therapist immediately. The only way you’ll get the best results from this treatment is if you are as relaxed as possible, and excruciating pain is impossible to relax through.

-What health issues can it treat?

There are many different ailments that can be treated effectively with deep tissue massage, such as:

  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Chronic back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Rehab of damaged muscles
  • Breaking down scar tissue
  • Stress and anxiety relief
  • Improved joint mobility
  • Chronic pain elsewhere in the body

-A few precautions to keep in mind

Deep tissue massage, while incredibly helpful for many people, can negatively impact others depending on specific health issues they may be dealing with. It is recommended you discuss your situation with your doctor prior to beginning deep tissue treatment if any of these are the case for you:

  • If you have been diagnosed with blood clots in the past, as deep tissue massage can dislodge these clots, causing possible serious health risks.
  • If you have gone through chemotherapy treatment, radiation, recent surgery of any kind, or other serious medical conditions.
  • It is not recommended for Osteoporosis patients to engage in deep tissue massage treatment.

There’s no reason to start your year off with the same aches and pains you carried with you through 2017. Consult with your physician to see if deep tissue massage is right for you.
