Many of us have jobs that require us to sit at a desk and work on computers for hours on end. Improper sitting posture, as well as lack of movement for long periods of time, can have detrimental affects on your spinal alignment. Over time, this can lead to chronic and severe neck and back pain. Depending on the severity, this kind of pain can severely restrict your body’s range of motion. While regular visits to your Greenacres chiropractor can help relieve this pain, you can also help prevent it by maintaining proper working posture throughout your work day.
Proper working or sitting posture, is all about maintaining a neutral body position. According to OSHA, this neutral body position is best described as a, “comfortable working posture in which your joints are naturally aligned.” Maintaining a neutral and comfortable position while you are working helps reduce the stress and strain on your body’s muscles and tendons. It also reduces the stress and tension that is applied to your skeletal system.
Generally, if most of your time is spent working at a computer or at your desk, you want to avoid hunching over your work. In order to maintain a neutral, comfortable position you should sit up straight in your chair so as to provide support to your back. Your thighs and hips should also be well supported by your chair and remain parallel to the floor. Although this neutral position helps prevent injury, it is not enough. It is also incredibly important for you to take some time to move around throughout your work day. Stretching and walking are great, healthy options.
